Evolving Port

Port Melbourne and Fishermans Bend change. Houses are changed or demolished and new forms of housing take their place. Port Houses records some of these changes.

Graham St, Port Melbourne

12 May 2013

The recent removal of some desert ash trees, in preparation for the planting of new trees, has created a good view of this group of houses in Graham St. I think it is the only grouping of this type of house in Port Melbourne.

86 Raglan St, Port Melbourne

86 Raglan St is for sale. There is something about the simplicity of the original brick house that appeals to me as well as the way it catches the evening light. It is one of three, though one of the houses has been painted so it is not so obvious.

Interesting that the City of Port Phillip database* shows a picture of no 82 from 1974. Not much has changed beyond a coat of paint on no 82.

* seach the heritage database by 82 Raglan St, or the registration number pm1738

Armada

Plus Architecture

5 September 2012

The newly completed Armada apartments in Nott St featured in the Age today and includes some gorgeous photographs of the cedar entry foyer.

Architect Craig Yelland of Plus Architecture described the look of the building as 'industrial seaside aesthetic rather than the cruise ship model.' Read more of the article here.

The cedar entry foyer would make returning home a pleasure. See more of Armada on Buxton's website.

In Port Melbourne, Buxton has also constructed Aqueous, the Anchorage Apartments, and the Zinc apartments.

Under construction

9 July 2011

Buxton's Insite newsletter describes the development at 115 Nott St:

'... Armada Apartments, a six-storey residential complex comprising 41 one and two-bedroom apartments and basement car parking at 115 Nott Street. Designed by Plus Architecture, the building's exterior is influenced by its seaside location and blends characteristics of modern day and historic shipping ports. The lower level reflects the sweeping lines of today's maritime architecture as well as visual interpretations of the everyday working machinery seen in a port environment. In contrast, the upper level design is based on an abstract grouping of sails while the selection of building materials complements the maritime theme.' (Edition 1, 2010)

Waterside: 95 - 117 Dow St

5 May 2012

Dow St was closed to all but local traffic today as a second crane was brought in to take away the crane from Waterside - behind Bianca. Always a relief to see the crane go. Dugga Beazley's boats hang on - to the right of the truck.

28 Evans St, Port Melbourne 7 December 2011

28 Evans St was the home of former mayor of Port Melbourne, Gordon Lockhart Edwards.

Edwards was elected to the Port Melbourne Council in 1972 and was mayor in 1975/76. His wife Jessie died at South Port Community Residential Home in 2011 after a life time of service in the Port Melbourne community - especially with the Peter Mac Auxilliary.

This house had been home to Doug McKenzie from 1948 until his passing in 2012. Doug was one of the last of the 'originals', being the first residents of the Fishermens Bend Estate. Doug was a tiler. He was also the President of the Sandridge Trugo Club for many years and an essential member of the Trugo team. Doug recalled starting school with a slate.

I'm sorry I left taking this picture for so long. No 53 was immaculately maintained at the time of sale. What do you suppose was the story of the scales - which have since disappeared?
Planning permit 103/2010 has been issued for the demolition of the existing dwelling and the construction of 2 three storey dwellings.

Two contestants on the 2011 season of The Block have used their prize money to buy this house. They don't want to demolish it! It is the only house of its kind in Port Melbourne.

Can anyone provide more context to help understand this building? It is so small - that's why I took the side view. The verandah detailing is very simple. The roof has no pitch.

202 Clark St is for sale. Before it's tidied up - here it is. I always feel sad when I see these family homes once so loved and tended - now dishevelled - before they take on a new life.

Clark St is notable for its plane trees - a pleasure for some, and a trial to others. Clark St was the edge of Port Melbourne's settlement west of the railway line till 1870.
